The reason is sound. Your car may be in someone's way, your lights may be on, there may have been a bump. In all of those, being reachable helps you as much as the other person.
The problem is not being reachable. It is what being reachable costs.
What actually goes wrong
The number is read by everyone who walks past, not only by the one person who needed it. The usual consequences:
Spam and marketing calls: number harvesters work car parks. Once you are on a list there is no coming off it.
Identity through WhatsApp: anyone who saves the number can see your profile photo and status. That hands a stranger standing beside your car something about you that you never offered.
Harassment: someone you have had a parking argument with walks away holding your number.
Fraud: exposed numbers are used to pick targets for fake "your car has been hit" calls.
Half-measures, and why they fall short
A second line works but costs money and means a second phone or an eSIM; most people stop checking it.
Masking part of the number makes it harder for everyone, including the person who genuinely needs to reach you.
A name and "please wait" is no use at all when something is urgent.
A QR alert: reachable without the number
A QR code on the glass takes whoever scans it to a page of prepared alerts: your car is blocking an exit, your lights are on, your car has been touched.
They pick one and send it, and you get a notification. They never see your number, email or name, and you never see theirs. There is no open chat, so there is no channel to be harassed through either.
The code stays under your control. If the alerts turn unwelcome you regenerate it, and the sticker on the glass stops working at that moment.

Is it legal to display a phone number on a car?
It is not prohibited. The problem is practical rather than legal: once the number is public there is no taking it back.
Does the person scanning the code learn who I am?
No. The alert page shows no name, phone, email or address — only the prepared alerts.
What if someone misuses the sticker?
You can block that sender, mute the vehicle for a while, or regenerate the code. Regenerating stops the old sticker working.
